Giant hotel and residential park to be built in Lake Balaton’s gem, Tihany: locals protested
There was a demonstration in Tihany, one of the most beautiful and popular settlements of Lake Balaton. Residents and holidaymakers protested against the incorporation in the World Heritage city. The contractor wants a hotel and a residential park in the area.
Over the weekend, hundreds of people gathered to hold a peaceful demonstration from the Tihany ferry. The participants aimed to protest against the planned construction in a green area called Kenderföld. The local Révbe Érünk Egyesület organised the action. Their demands have been summarised in three main points, writes euronews.hu.
- Tihany should not be a city.
- Leave space for nature, forests, reeds, swamps.
- Regarding the fate and future of Tihany, residents and resort owners should also be involved in the decision-making processes.
The main fear of the people of Tihany is that the ecologically sensitive area will disappear.
The construction plans are very grandiose. A total of 388 apartments are planned in 22 buildings in the area, as well as a 120-room wellness centre and hotel. In the swampy, reed area, the investor would build a walkway. During the construction that lasts for several years, the traffic serving the construction and later the residents further increase the congestion of Tihany.
An additional 110 flats could be built in the area of the former rider school. Within the framework of the Balaton Gate project, a market square, a parking lot for 200 cars, and a visitor centre would also be built. “On the northern shore of Lake Balaton, there is not a single installation of this density in a single settlement, not even in Balatonfüred,” explained György Molnár, the president of The Révbe Érünk Egyesület.
Residents want them to rethink their plans.
Two local independent representatives also took part in the demonstration. However, Mayor Imre Tósoki was not present, writes 444.hu. The people of Tihany want the municipality to communicate with them. During a two-year construction moratorium, it would be possible to rethink plans and rules. In this way, green areas, trees to be felled and local wildlife can be protected.
- Lake Balaton’s water quality worsening — too many people use it as a toilet!
- Is Lake Balaton more expensive than Croatia?

There are plenty of wellness hotels in Hungary and certainly round the lake. Tihany is a beautiful place and it will be ruined if this goes ahead. There is no need to build anything here, let it be visited for its natural beauty not for people to be pampered in a hotel and who never see the outdoors.
I quite agree with the first comment. For short term gain a developer wants to permanently disgugure and ruin a beautiful area. This should NOT be allowed.
